Can’t imagine your house without a timber floor?

Aug 06, 2019

If your renovation means it has to be timber flooring, without compromise, you might consider an engineered timber floor.  True timber, with the practicality of modern techniques, an engineered timber floor is a 100% timber flooring product, but with all the benefits of modern technology.

Put simply, and engineered timber floor has a timber top sheet in your specified species, supported by plantation timber core materials.  Depending on the floor this core might be a different kind of hardwood, or plywood.

It might sound complex, but what it means is that you still get the real timber you’re after, with the benefit of a much more stable structure than conventional floorboards.

One downfall of traditional solid flooring is that the grain ends align in one direction.  The downside of this, is that they don’t have the 3 dimensional stability of engineered timbers, and can be impacted by temperature, humidity and other environmental changes.  By constructing a sandwich of alternating grain directions, and topping it with a thick veneer of your chosen timber, the floor becomes far more more stable.

The engineered nature also means that many more wear layers can be applied in the factory, so you end up with a more durable floor, that doesn’t require days of sanding and finishing during installation.

At the same time, because they’re real wood, Engineered timber floors still allow you to sand and refinish if the need were to arise, and due to the depth of the tongue  on the tongue and groove traditional hardwood floors, often you have more usable wood to work with when refinishing a hardwood floor.

The outcome? Is a genuine timber look through the whole house, including wet areas, with a more stable product.

Sustainability

If your environmental footprint is important, then engineered timber is the way to go.  Using a much smaller amount of timber veneer from certified forests, backed by plantation hardwoods, your floor has a much smaller footprint, while still giving you the look and feel you need.
